GM Develops Fix for C8 Corvette Z06 and ZR1 Recall Over Fire Risk

There is good news for owners of the C8 Corvette Z06 and the upcoming ZR1. General Motors has reportedly developed a remedy for the safety recall and stop-sale that was issued in August over a potential fire risk. The issue affects approximately 25,000 high-performance Corvettes, the majority of which are already in customer hands.

The automaker is now focused on producing and distributing the necessary parts to its dealership network to begin repairs. Here’s a breakdown of the problem, the solution, and what owners should do in the meantime.

The Problem: A Potential Fire Risk During Refueling

The recall was initiated because of a specific fire risk associated with refueling. The issue affects the following models:

  • 2023–2025 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
  • 2025–2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
  • On these vehicles, it is possible for fuel to spill onto the driver-side radiator during the refueling process. The powerful cooling fans in the Z06 and ZR1 could then blow this spilled fuel onto a hot engine component or another ignition source, potentially causing a fire.

The Solution: GM Announces a Recall Remedy

According to a statement from the automaker, a physical fix has been developed. "GM has developed the recall remedy (an insert/shield to divert spilled fuel) and is working to quickly source production and deliver it to dealers," the company confirmed.

This remedy involves installing a specially designed shield that will physically block any spilled fuel and divert it safely away from any potential ignition sources, effectively eliminating the fire risk. This repair will be performed by certified technicians at Chevrolet dealerships.

    When Will Parts Be Available?

While the remedy has been developed, GM has not yet announced a specific date when the parts will be available for installation. The company is currently in the process of manufacturing the new components and organizing logistics to distribute them to dealerships across the country.

Once the parts are available, GM will send official notification letters to affected owners, encouraging them to schedule a service appointment. In addition to the cars already on the road, an estimated 1,630 new Corvettes are currently being held at dealerships under the stop-sale notice. These vehicles will be repaired before they are delivered to customers.

What Owners Should Do Now: Official GM Guidance

While waiting for the recall notice, GM is urging all C8 Z06 and ZR1 owners to be extra cautious when refueling their vehicles. The company advises owners to strictly follow the instructions outlined in the owner's manual:

  • Always turn the vehicle off before starting to refuel.
  • Ensure the fuel nozzle is fully inserted into the filler neck.
  • Do not overfill or "top off" the fuel tank. Stop refueling after the fuel pump's automatic shutoff clicks once.
  • Owners can also get the latest information on their specific vehicle by visiting gm.com/service and entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to check the status of this and any other recalls. The recall repair, once available, will be performed free of charge.
