Ford Recalls 274,000 Expedition and Navigator SUVs for Brake Fluid Leak Risk

Ford has issued a significant safety recall for nearly 274,000 of its full-size SUVs, including the Ford Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator. The recall addresses an issue with the front brake lines that could lead to a brake fluid leak and compromise the vehicle’s stopping power.

This action is separate from a previous brake-related recall for older models and focuses specifically on newer vehicles. Here is what owners of the affected SUVs need to know.

The Problem: What Expedition and Navigator Owners Need to Know

The recall stems from a potential issue where the front brake lines can make contact with a component of the engine’s air cleaner assembly. Over time, the rubbing and vibration can damage the brake line, potentially causing it to leak brake fluid.

A loss of brake fluid will lead to reduced brake function, a “soft” or spongy brake pedal feel, and increased stopping distances, which significantly increases the risk of a crash. According to the recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford estimates that only about 1 percent of the recalled vehicles are expected to actually have the defect, but all vehicles in the population must be inspected.

Affected Models and How to Check Your Vehicle

This recall is specific to the following vehicles:

  • 2022-2024 Ford Expedition (223,315 units)
  • 2022-2024 Lincoln Navigator (50,474 units)
  • Owners can confirm if their specific SUV is included in this safety recall by visiting the NHTSA recalls website (nhtsa.gov/recalls) and entering their 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

The Solution: Inspection and Free Repair

The remedy for this issue will be handled by authorized Ford and Lincoln dealerships. The process involves a thorough inspection of the front brake lines.

    1. Owners will be instructed to bring their vehicle to a dealer for inspection.
    2. A technician will examine the brake lines for any signs of contact, chafing, or damage.
    3. If damage is found, the brake line and/or the air-cleaner outlet pipe will be replaced with new parts that ensure proper clearance.

This inspection and any necessary repairs will be performed completely free of charge to the customer.

    What Owners Should Do

Ford began notifying dealers about this recall in early May 2025 and was scheduled to mail official notification letters to owners by May 30, 2025. Owners of affected vehicles should have already received this notice.

If you own a 2022-2024 Expedition or Navigator and have not received a letter, you should check your VIN on the NHTSA website or contact your local dealership. Upon confirming your vehicle is part of the recall, you should schedule a service appointment for the free inspection and potential repair to ensure your vehicle’s safety.
