Ford Recalls Nearly 30,000 F-150 Lightnings for Loss of Steering Risk
Ford has issued a safety recall for 29,501 of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks from the 2024 and 2025 model years. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a critical suspension component may not have been installed correctly, which could lead to a partial loss of steering control and increase the risk of a crash.
The automaker will be notifying owners to bring their vehicles to a dealership for a free inspection and repair. Here is what F-150 Lightning owners need to know about this recall.
The Problem: What F-150 Lightning Owners Need to Know
The recall centers on a specific part in the truck's front suspension: the ball-joint nut on the upper control arms. This nut secures the control arm to the steering knuckle, a crucial connection for steering the vehicle.
Ford has determined that on the affected trucks, this nut may not have been tightened to the proper specification during the manufacturing process. If the nut becomes loose or falls off entirely, the upper control arm could separate from the steering knuckle. This would result in a sudden and dangerous loss of steering control.
Affected Models and Warning Signs

The Solution: Inspection and Repair
The remedy for this issue will be handled by authorized Ford dealerships. The repair process involves a thorough inspection of the front suspension.
- A technician will inspect the ball-joint nuts on both front upper control arms.
- If the vehicle passes inspection, the original nut will be replaced with a new one and tightened to the correct torque specification.
- If the vehicle fails inspection, the technician will replace both the nut and the entire steering knuckle assembly.
This inspection and any necessary repairs will be performed completely free of charge to the customer.
What Owners Should Do
Ford will be sending official notification letters by mail to the owners of all affected F-150 Lightning trucks. Upon receiving the notice, owners should contact their local Ford dealer to schedule a service appointment for the free recall work.
In the meantime, owners can check if their specific vehicle is included in this recall by entering their 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA recalls website (nhtsa.gov/recalls). If you hear or feel any of the warning signs, you should contact your dealer immediately.
